The Sanctuary is situated between two remote “bed-room communities” of Jerusalem. Despite the shortage of public open spaces in Jerusalem the site suffered from being an illegal waste dump for many years. The dump was a source of serious environmental and sanitation problems.

15 years ago the Jerusalem branch of the Society for Nature Protection in Israel, together with group local activists headed by Dr. Anna Godneva, started to clean up and revive the territory. They managed to save the unique wild flowers from the French Hill district of Jerusalem by transferring them from areas intended for development there to the wadi.

The former dump has become a real park. The Jerusalem Wild Flower Sanctuary was inaugurated on March 14th 2005.
